Big Island Landscape Workshop
september 7-10, 2023 - Hilo, Hi

The Island of Hawaii is a photographer's paradise. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, flowing lava, active volcanoes, and brilliant views of the night sky present endless opportunities for dramatic images.

We will photograph the night sky over lava flow, journey to Mauna Kea, and get up close views of flowing lava. We will also photograph sea turtles on a black sand beach, and catch the morning view of Rainbow Falls.

  • Personal portfolio review from Jason Weingart.

What you will learn at your workshop

What you will learn at your workshop

Learn to light your foreground to produce dramatic night images.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This is one of my more intense workshops. It is limited to six guests. We will utilize our time extremely efficiently with not much in the way of downtime. Sunrise and sunset, along with golden hour light will be taken advantage of each day.

We will also shoot a lot of astrophotography. If you like photographing the Milky Way over an incredible foreground, this is the workshop for you! We will be photographing the stars from the Mauna Kea Observatory and Kilauea caldera.

If ocean entry of lava is active, we will be taking a lava tour by boat. This tour is optional and the cost is not included in the price of the workshop.

Hiking to active lava on the final day will require hiking over uneven terrain. We will take the hike at a very leisurely pace, with a guide. Depending on the location of the lava during our visit, this hike could range from 0.5 to 3 miles. The cost of the guide is not included in the workshop cost. This hike is optional. Alternatively, you could take a helicopter tour over the lava and waive at us as you fly past!

This workshop is a lot of work but the reward is great. There aren't many places on Earth where you can stand on ground that is younger than you!

THE BIG ISLAND LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP WILL HELP YOU

  • Improve Your Landscape Composition
  • Balance Complex Lighting Scenarios
  • Photograph the Night Sky
  • Photograph an Active Volcano
  • Photograph and Understand Lava
  • Create Stunning Timelapses
  • Create realistic HDR Images
  • Learn Focus Stacking
